Holy whitespace! We tweaked the style on Skype Beta for Mac
Twitter is on fire about the new Skype 5.0 beta for Mac. We downloaded it as soon as we heard, and yes, we were just as underwhelmed by the UI as you were. We love whitespace, but c’mon guys, we don’t want to buy a new cinema display to view our Skype chats. So, we had some fun this afternoon tweaking the CSS, and below is what we came up with.

To add this theme to your fancy new Skype beta, just follow these 7 easy steps:
- Download the FULL chat style below
- Go to your Applications folder and right click on Skype. From the right click menu choose “Show Package Contents”
- Now browse to Contents> Resources> ChatStyles
- Unzip the Full.SkypeChatStyle file and drag into this folder
- Restart Skype.
- Go to Skype Preferences> Messaging and from the “Style” drop down choose the Full theme.
- Restart Skype.
*Edit: We updated the download with some minor tweaks!

Not all elements in the mix are working. Calls and SMS messages still use the old layout.
@Margus – Thanks for pointing that out, we apparently weren’t real thorough with our styling. Will fix shortly!

Would be nice if you could kick out more white space on the “Contacts”-Page. I got a 24″ and it’s still quite unusable.
@Tom I know, the css only allows for editing content in the message pane. If we find a way to hack it we’ll post the solution!
I freaking love you!
The /me actions aren’t styled.
What do users of Skype 5 for Mac think about the User Interface?…
I enjoy the fact that everything is in a window, but find there is too much whitespace, particularly in chat. Fortunately you can fix the whitespace in chat with CSS. I’d recommend applying this to it. http://www.fullcreative.com/2010/11/holy-whitespa...
If only we could tweak the main window now! I don’t care much for them Avatars and the sub-line under the contact ( mood message ). That would compact everything so much! Thanks for the great job on the ChatStyle.
Excellent!
For the latest version you have to put the chat style files in ~/Library/Application Support/Skype/ChatStyles. There’s a readme in the app contents that explains this, but I figured I’d toss a comment up here for those folks as lazy as I am.
returned to v2.8
the only real way to get it looking as it should
such as shame
Doesn’t work in the Application Package, but there’s an official Readme-File in there that gives the user this advice for installing custom styles:
“Put your custom chat styles into ~/Library/Application Support/Skype/ChatStyles.”
Thanks!!
I am also having a problem if I scroll down to fast it restarts itself???
Is there a way to edit out those time/date stamps on the right? Don’t really need ‘m. And adjust the text to flow into that space ( same padding as on the left )?
